The son of Mallorcan parents who had emigrated to Argentina, in 1957 he the Provincial Academy of Fine Art in Mendoza, where he remained until 1962, when he travelled to Europe and remained for brief periods in Italy, Portugal, England, Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona, settling in Mallorca in 1964. Fie now lives in the country and has his studio in an old 12th-century flour mill.
Since he held his first individual exhibition in 1958 at the Club Universitario in Mendoza, Amengual has not stopped exhibiting the world over: Argentina (Artistas europeos [European Artists], Modern Art Gallery, Cordoba 1971); Spain (Club de los miercoles [Wednesday Club], Galena Kandinsky, Madrid, 1980; ARCO, the stand of Gianni Giacobbi, Madrid, 1995; Contemporary Art in the Balearics, Palacio de la Virrei-na, Barcelona, 1980); Germany (Atelier Christa Moering, Wiesbaden, 1979 and 1981); Egypt (4th International Biennial, Cairo, 1992); Italy (Artfssima, Modern and Contemporary Art Fair, Turin, 1994; Des del Mediterrani [From the Mediterrane¬ an], Casa di Giorgione, Citta di Castelfranco, Venice, 1995). Flis work, initially figurative and symbolist in its approach, has evolved towards the abstract. Flis latest exhibitions have been, individually: the Es Moll d’en Xina Cultural Association, Algaida, in 1998; Can Creu de Inca, Capdepera, in 2000; Galerie Petric (Cologne, Germany), in 2001. Collectively: Itin-erario sobre papel, Dibujo Contemporaneo en Mallorca [Itiner¬ ary on paper, Contemporary Drawing in Mallorca], Torre de Ses Puntes, Manacor, in 1999; Esculturas de Pintores, Una verdad posible [Sculptures of Painters, A Possible Truth] at the Palau Solleric in Palma, in 2000; El erotismo en el Arte Contemporaneo de las Islas Baleares [The Eroticism of the Contemporary Art of the Balearic Islands] with exhibitions in Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Barcelona, in 2001. Flis work can be found at the Fernando Fader Museum in Mendoza (Argentina), at the Solidarity Museum in Santiago (Chile), at the Contemporary Art Museum in Elche (Spain) and at the Contemporary Art Museum of Catalonia in Banyoles (Spain).
